Senior Energy Advisor

Jorge is a leading energy expert, with over 30 years of experience in the European private energy sector, politics and academia. Since 2007, he is also the founder and chairman of NEWES, New Energy Solutions, a company acting in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency in Europe. During his career, Jorge Vasconcelos has served as a member of the advisory board of the Harvard Environmental Economics Programme and member of the European Commission’s Advisory Group on the Energy Roadmap 2050.

In addition, he was a special advisor on energy to three Presidents of the European Commission (Prodi, Barroso, Juncker). He was also President of the Portuguese Electric Vehicle Association and advised the Portuguese Government in the “Group of Wise Men” on the use of European funds, as President of the Commission for Green Tax Reform. He served as Chair of the Advisory Board of the IASS (Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, now Research Institute for Sustainability, RIFS) in Potsdam, as founding member and Honorary President of the European Federation of Energy Law Associations and founder as well as first Chairman of the Council of European Energy Regulators. Furthermore, he is author and editor of numerous books and articles on energy.

Jorge has also shaped academic developments in the renewable energy field. He was a professor in Germany, Italy and Portugal and is currently an invited professor at the MIT Portugal Sustainable Energy Systems programme. He is also founder, part–time professor and member of the executive committee of the Florence School of Regulation.

Jorge Vasconcelos holds a degree in electrical engineering from Porto University and PhD from Erlangen-Nuremberg University.
